On the topic of R universe for production (r-universe-org/help#363), https://github.com/r-releases is a prototype of a community-driven CRAN-like repository. It automatically builds and refreshes an R universe of package releases based on community contributions to https://github.com/r-releases/r-releases/pulls. Documentation is at https://github.com/r-releases/help. @shikokuchuo and I are admins of the GitHub org.
I think this effort supports the goals of the R Repositories working group, and it would be amazing to discuss and enhance this approach as a group.
