The idea is to be able to access the parent directory of the current document using a variable such as ${current_doc_parent} when using ecode's build system

Mhh would make more sense to provide the current doc directory? ${current_doc_dir} and for parent just doing relative path: ${current_doc_dir}/..?

Yeah that was my idea, perhaps I worded it badly
