One of the primary design goals here is to allow very large (out-of-core) indexes, which would solve a number of issues that users face when querying data with large reference spaces -- for example, it comes up all the time in genomics (e.g. related-sciences/gwas-analysis#5). Axis labels which can be efficently queried OOC will expand the applicability of the solution designed in TileDB-VCF to other types of genomic data.
