Serenade doesn't recognize the VScode plugin

OS: NixOS 22.05
VScode version: 1.68.1
Serenade VS Code plugin version: v1.5.3
Serenade.app version: 2.0.2

Serenade doesn't recognize the VScode plugin for me. "Focus code" doesn't work, and the serenade "active application icon" (see image below) remains on the previous application though a command like "type hi" doesn't seem to execute anywhere. I know NixOS is pretty different from other distros, so any guidance on where I could look to debug further would be helpful. The ~/.serenade/serenade.log file is empty.

The Chrome extension seems to work normally.
