Add support for date objects and not strings in jinja templates

Hi,
i would like to format the dates which are used in the jinja2 templates. The dates are currently strings and just providing them as date objects to the template rendering would allow users to customize the date output.

I will start to work on a PR for this, maybe we can get it into a state to merge it upstream at some point.
