These changes allow tests to pass on python 3.7 (using explicit relative imports, byte strings). I haven't checked whether these are compatible with previous versions.

Looks like the tests failed because Travis couldn't get hold of python 2.6 (not the code). Perhaps add 3.4 and 3.7 into the .travis.yml?
